Iron Filters & Sulfur Removal
for Tampa Bay Well Water

Rust-orange staining in your sinks and a rotten egg smell from your taps are two of the most common well water complaints in Pasco, Hillsborough, and Hernando County. Both have the same cause — Florida's aquifer — and both are permanently fixable with the right whole-home filtration system.

Two Common Florida Well Water Problems — One Solution

Iron & Rust Staining

Dissolved iron in Florida well water is one of the most common problems we treat. Florida's limestone aquifer naturally leaches iron into groundwater throughout the Tampa Bay region, especially in Pasco and Hernando Counties.

As iron-laden water contacts air, it oxidizes into rust particles that stain everything it touches — sinks, toilets, tubs, laundry, and dishwashers. Even low concentrations of 0.3 mg/L (the EPA aesthetic limit) cause visible orange staining.

Sulfur / Rotten Egg Odor

The rotten egg smell in Florida well water is caused by hydrogen sulfide (H₂S) gas — a naturally occurring compound in the Floridan Aquifer that supplies most well water across Pasco, Hillsborough, and Hernando counties.

Even trace concentrations above 0.05 mg/L produce a strong, unpleasant odor. The smell often gets worse in warm weather and can be present throughout the home. An air-injection filter eliminates the gas at the point of entry before it reaches a single tap.

How Iron & Sulfur Filtration Works

T&K Water installs air-injection iron and sulfur filters — systems that use an air pocket inside the tank to oxidize dissolved iron and hydrogen sulfide before they have a chance to contact your fixtures. As water passes through the air pocket, dissolved iron oxidizes into a particulate form that can be trapped and removed by the filter media. Hydrogen sulfide gas is oxidized and converted, eliminating the odor.

The system backwashes automatically on a set schedule (typically at night), flushing the accumulated iron and refreshing the air pocket. No chemicals required — just clean, simple filtration.

For homes with very high iron concentrations or combined well water problems, we often recommend a dual-tank system: an iron/sulfur filter followed by a water softener, giving you whole-home protection against every Florida well water issue in a single install.

Free Water Test First — Always

We test your well water on-site for iron, sulfur, hardness, pH, and more before recommending any system. The right filtration depends on your specific water chemistry — and we only recommend what you actually need.

Iron & Sulfur Filter FAQs

Why does my Tampa Bay well water smell like rotten eggs?

The rotten egg or sulfur smell in Florida well water is caused by hydrogen sulfide (H2S) gas — a naturally occurring compound in the Floridan Aquifer. It's extremely common in Pasco, Hillsborough, and Hernando County well water. An air-injection iron and sulfur filter installed at the point of entry eliminates the odor before it reaches any faucet in your home.

What causes rust or orange staining in my sinks and laundry?

Orange or rust-colored staining is caused by dissolved iron in your water — extremely common in Florida well water. As iron-laden water contacts air, it oxidizes and deposits rust stains on porcelain, laundry, and appliances. Even low concentrations of 0.3 mg/L can cause visible staining. An iron filter removes iron before it reaches your fixtures.

Do I need a separate filter for iron and sulfur?

Not necessarily. An air-injection filter — sometimes called a dual-media filter or iron/sulfur filter — can address both problems in a single tank. T&K Water will test your water and recommend the right system based on your specific iron and sulfur levels.

Can iron in water damage my appliances?

Yes. High iron concentrations corrode plumbing, clog water heater elements, stain dishwashers and washing machines, and dramatically shorten appliance life. An iron filter installed at the whole-home entry point protects every fixture and appliance from iron deposits.

How does an iron filter work?

Most whole-home iron filters use one of two approaches: air injection (which oxidizes dissolved iron so it can be filtered out mechanically) or catalytic media (which converts and removes iron through a chemical reaction). T&K Water installs air-injection systems that handle both iron and hydrogen sulfide, typically in a single tank.

How long does an iron filter last?

A properly maintained iron filter typically lasts 10–15 years. The media inside may need periodic replacement depending on iron and sulfur levels. T&K Water offers annual checkup plans and can assess whether your media needs refreshing during a service visit.
