Most homeowners are surprised by what their water test reveals. Here's what we find most often across Pasco, Pinellas, Hillsborough, and Hernando counties — and what actually fixes each problem for good.
Hard Water
Tampa Bay area water is classified as hard to very hard. Municipal water in Hillsborough County runs 8–12 GPG; Pasco and Hernando County well water often measures 15–25 GPG. Hardness causes scale buildup on fixtures, reduces appliance efficiency, and leaves skin and hair feeling dry.
Iron & Rust Staining
Dissolved iron in well water oxidizes when it contacts air, depositing rust-orange stains on sinks, toilets, tubs, and laundry. Even low concentrations of 0.3 mg/L can cause visible staining. Florida's limestone aquifer naturally leaches iron into groundwater throughout the Tampa Bay region.
Sulfur / Rotten Egg Odor
The rotten egg smell in Florida well water is caused by hydrogen sulfide gas — a naturally occurring compound in the Floridan Aquifer that supplies most well water in the Tampa Bay area. Even small concentrations (above 0.05 mg/L) produce a strong, unpleasant odor. It's harmless at trace levels but makes water unusable without treatment.
Chlorine & Chloramine Taste
Tampa Bay municipal water providers add chlorine or chloramines (chlorine + ammonia) to disinfect the water supply — required by EPA standards. While safe to drink, these disinfectants give water a chemical taste and odor, and can react with organic matter to form disinfection byproducts. An activated carbon filter or reverse osmosis system removes them at the tap.
