Question 1

What areas does T&K Water Conditioning serve?

Accepted Answer

T&K Water Conditioning serves homeowners and businesses throughout Pasco, Pinellas, Hillsborough, and Hernando counties in the Tampa Bay area of Florida. Service cities include New Port Richey, Wesley Chapel, Land O' Lakes, Zephyrhills, Clearwater, St. Petersburg, Largo, Tampa, Brandon, Riverview, Brooksville, and Spring Hill.

Question 2

How do I know if I need a water softener?

Accepted Answer

Common signs you need a water softener include white scale buildup on faucets and showerheads, spotty dishes coming out of the dishwasher, dry or itchy skin after showering, flat or lifeless hair, shortened appliance lifespan, and soap that doesn't lather well. Tampa Bay area water is typically considered hard to very hard, often measuring 15–25 grains per gallon (GPG). A free in-home water test from T&K will confirm exactly what's in your water before any recommendation is made.

Question 3

How hard is the water in Tampa Bay, Florida?

Accepted Answer

Tampa Bay area water is classified as hard to very hard. Municipal water in Hillsborough County typically measures 8–12 grains per gallon (GPG), while well water in Pasco and Hernando counties can run 15–25 GPG or higher. Water with more than 7 GPG is considered hard; above 14 GPG is considered very hard. Hard water causes scale buildup, reduces appliance efficiency, and contributes to dry skin and hair.

Question 4

What causes the rotten egg smell in my well water?

Accepted Answer

The rotten egg or sulfur smell in Florida well water is caused by hydrogen sulfide (H2S) gas, which is naturally occurring in the aquifer system that much of Pasco, Hillsborough, and Hernando County draw from. It is harmless at low levels but highly unpleasant. T&K Water installs whole-home sulfur removal systems — typically an air-injection iron and sulfur filter — that eliminate the odor at the point of entry so it doesn't reach any faucet in your home.

Question 5

What causes rust or orange staining in my sinks, toilets, and laundry?

Accepted Answer

Orange or rust-colored staining is caused by dissolved iron in your water supply, which is extremely common in Florida well water. As water sits in contact with air, the dissolved iron oxidizes and deposits rust-colored stains on porcelain, laundry, and appliances. An iron filter installed at the whole-home entry point removes iron before it reaches your fixtures, eliminating staining entirely.

Question 6

What does a reverse osmosis system remove from drinking water?

Accepted Answer

A reverse osmosis (RO) system removes up to 99% of dissolved contaminants by forcing water through a semi-permeable membrane. This includes chlorine, chloramines, fluoride, nitrates, nitrites, lead, arsenic, pesticides, bacteria, viruses, heavy metals, and total dissolved solids (TDS). RO systems are typically installed under the kitchen sink or on a countertop and provide clean, great-tasting drinking water directly from a dedicated tap.

Question 7

What is the difference between a water softener and a water filter?

Accepted Answer

A water softener uses an ion-exchange process to remove hardness minerals — primarily calcium and magnesium — replacing them with sodium ions. This prevents scale buildup, softens skin and hair, and protects appliances. A water filter, by contrast, physically or chemically removes contaminants like chlorine, sediment, iron, sulfur, or heavy metals. Many Tampa Bay homes need both: a whole-home softener for hardness, and a reverse osmosis system under the kitchen sink for drinking water quality.

Question 8

Do I need a water softener if I have city water?

Accepted Answer

Yes, in most cases. Tampa Bay municipal water from Hillsborough County Utilities and other local providers still contains significant hardness minerals (typically 8–12 GPG), which causes scale buildup on appliances, spotty dishes, and dry skin. City water is treated for safety but not for hardness. A water softener removes those minerals at the point of entry to your home, protecting your plumbing, water heater, dishwasher, and washing machine.

Question 9

What is UV water purification and do I need it?

Accepted Answer

UV (ultraviolet) purification uses a UV light chamber to neutralize bacteria, viruses, and other microorganisms as water passes through — without adding any chemicals to your water. It is especially recommended for homes on well water, where bacterial contamination is possible, and as an additional layer of protection for any household that wants peace of mind. T&K Water installs UV purification as a standalone system or as part of a dual-tank water treatment setup.

Question 10

How long does a water softener installation take?

Accepted Answer

A standard water softener installation at a Tampa Bay home typically takes 2–4 hours from start to finish. T&K Water technicians handle all plumbing connections, program the control head, and walk you through operation before they leave. No overnight service disruption is required.

Question 11

How long does a water softener last?

Accepted Answer

A well-maintained water softener typically lasts 15–20 years. Key factors include water quality (very high iron or hardness accelerates wear), salt quality, and whether regeneration is properly scheduled. Regular salt refills and periodic resin cleaning extend system life. T&K Water offers ongoing salt delivery and maintenance service to keep systems running efficiently for years.

Question 12

Can I rent or lease a water softener instead of buying one?

Accepted Answer

Yes. T&K Water offers flexible lease, rental, and purchase options for water softeners, iron filters, reverse osmosis systems, and dual-tank setups. Rental and lease programs require no large upfront investment and typically include service and maintenance. This makes professional-grade water treatment accessible for renters, budget-conscious homeowners, and anyone who doesn't want to commit to a purchase.

Question 13

Do you service other brands besides the ones you install?

Accepted Answer

Yes. T&K Water technicians are trained to service and repair most major water treatment brands. We carry a large parts inventory and can often diagnose and fix issues on the first visit. Every repair is backed by a 1-year repair guarantee.

Question 14

What is NSF certification and why does it matter for water treatment equipment?

Accepted Answer

NSF International is an independent organization that tests and certifies water treatment equipment to strict safety and performance standards. NSF/ANSI 44 covers water softeners; NSF/ANSI 58 covers reverse osmosis systems; NSF/ANSI 55 covers UV systems. Equipment certified by NSF has been independently verified to perform as claimed and to not introduce harmful materials into your water. T&K Water supplies only NSF-certified equipment.

Question 15

What happens during a free in-home water test?

Accepted Answer

A T&K Water technician visits your home, collects a water sample from a kitchen or bathroom faucet, and tests it on-site for hardness, iron, sulfur, chlorine/chloramines, pH, and other relevant parameters. You see the results immediately. The technician explains what each reading means in plain language and only recommends a solution if one is genuinely needed — there's no sales pressure.

Question 16

How much does a water softener cost in Tampa Bay?

Accepted Answer

Water softener costs in the Tampa Bay area vary depending on the size of the home, water hardness level, and whether additional treatment (iron filtration, UV purification) is needed. T&K Water offers purchase, lease, and rental options to fit most budgets. A free in-home consultation includes a written quote with no obligation.
